Peter PanI love teaching Peter Pan to my fifth graders!
Most people aren't aware that Peter Pan was a play first, but it's true! Peter Pan is a classic, 5-Act play with lots of action and adventure by Scotsman J.M. Barrie. The characters are colorful and very fun to perform (who can resist the elegant Captain Hook?), and the magic of the play captures the imagination. We talk about flying and pixie dust, then we discuss the practicalities of bringing that magic to the stage. We read a little bit of Peter Pan at a time, then we incorporate the units below into the play. It is a great 12 weeks with your students! |

Vocabulary |
As we read the play, we discuss vocabulary such as stage directions, actor, director, character, and character development.
|
Speeches |
Students write and perform an "About Me" speech over a lost boy or girl that they make up. Students also perform interviews, improvisations, and commercials.
|
Storytelling |
Students practice body and voice awareness by creating characters through improvisations, miming, movement games, lip synchs, and skits.
|
Script Analysis |
Students form connections to the script by creating characters from the play, discussing how to produce a play, designing and creating a costume for a character, playing games that re-create characters and settings from the play, and doing research on the time period and author.
|
TV/Film |
Students compare and contrast plays, TV shows, and movies by watching samples of each and completing a Venn diagram. Students create a commercial and a product using advertising techniques.
